In 1948, the Municipal University of Wichita (known informally as Wichita University) and former WWII Marine Wilbur Elsea designed a mascot with, in his words, “a serious, no-nonsense scowl” and intimidating persona to represent their athletic mascot, the Shockers. In 1959, Elsea’s original, anthropomorphic shock of wheat got a WU sweater and updated scythe, as shown here on this midcentury-inspired design for the Fightin’ Shockers.
